The Water

B.E.F. 1643
The Siwanoy

The Siwanoy called this place Snakapins: land by the two waters. The first name is still the truest.

Clason Point Military Academy

The Coney Island of the Bronx

An amusement park rose here, the Coney Island of the Bronx, and the peninsula became a place people crossed the city to reach.

The Saltwater Pool

The same years. A saltwater pool, three hundred feet long and fifty wide, was filled from the river itself. The people of this shore bathed in their own water.

1939

Soundview Park was laid down, landfill over salt marsh.

The Sewer Project

The City completed an $85.1 million sewer project at Pugsley Creek. The long repair had begun.

The Water Today

The water today

One sewer overflow pipe still opens into Pugsley Creek. The State rates this water for fishing, not for bathing. Recent city projects have cut the overflow by 68 percent. It is better than it was. It is not yet what it was.

The people of this shore once bathed in salt water drawn from their own river. We are working toward the day they can again.
